After more than a decade of grassroots development and quiet perseverance, the Cedarville University Rugby Club is experiencing a remarkable resurgence.  What began as an unofficial group in 2009 has grown into a dynamic, gospel-centered community of athletes — with a passionate leader at the helm: Club President Allister Jones. 

Jones, a native of Wales — where rugby is more a way of life than a game — brought fresh energy and vision when he assumed leadership of the team. “I grew up watching it. My dad played all his life,” said Jones. They would watch every national game when Wales played — a tradition that became part of who they are. 

While the club officially gained recognition on campus in 2011 under Andrew Held, momentum stalled during the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous leaders Ben Sanders and Luke Reidel did their best to keep the team afloat, often struggling to gather enough players to field a full squad. At times, practices had just two attendees. 

That changed dramatically this past year. 

Determined to rebuild the team, Jones took a bold approach at the annual Involvement Fair. After realizing their table’s location at the end of the event led to limited foot traffic, Jones and several teammates canvassed the fair, encouraging students to visit their booth. Their hard work paid off, as more than 100 students expressed interest. When practices began, 30 to 40 players showed up, many of them freshmen. 

“There are no pads. It’s pure contact. It takes a certain level of courage and bravery to play,” said Jones. “But what makes rugby great is that it’s inclusive to any shape or size. Everyone can contribute.” 

Social media also played a key role in the team’s revival, with social media manager Logan Cole transforming the @CUrugby Instagram into a well-read page through consistent gameday posts and light-hearted promotional content. One standout piece, a classroom skit featuring rugby players, was created by team member Cade Moses and garnered over 1,500 views. 

Thanks to the influx of players, Cedarville was able to play its first 15-on-15 matches in years. Last season, the team started with a tough home loss to Xavier University but rebounded the next week with a dominant 64–12 win over Geneva College. 

“No matter the weather, no matter the conditions ... it’s about the camaraderie you have with each other,” said Jones. “That’s what makes it special.” 

Now boasting roughly 30 active members, the team recently captured the conference championship for the first time since 2021, defeating Hillsdale in the finals on April 12. However, success hasn’t come without challenges. The team operates with limited financial resources — spending nearly $4,000 over the past year just to cover travel and equipment costs. While they were able to raise the necessary funds over Christmas break, further ambitions require more support. 

Although the team was unable to attend this year’s national tournament at the Maryland SoccerPlex in the Washington, D.C., area on April 25-26, they aim to raise funds and secure a coach to position themselves for future opportunities. 

Beyond the team’s competitive successes, Jones has also seen rugby as a platform for ministry. In a sport known for its aggression and intensity, he views each match as an opportunity to witness to opponents and promote a Christ-centered culture. 

Jones shared that the team has been praying before games and is exploring ways to use rugby socials as opportunities to share the gospel. Their goal is to stand out and set a tone that reflects Christ. 

Looking ahead, Jones hopes to continue building momentum over the summer and elevate the club beyond its current status. With growing interest and participation, the future looks bright for the Cedarville University Rugby Club.
