One Thousand Days Transformed - The Campaign for Cedarville

by Allyson O'Bryant, Student Public Relations Writer

From small-town sports injuries to training alongside top orthopedic surgeons in the Colorado Rockies, Madeline Barnes of Lewis Center, Ohio, is proving how far faith, perseverance and professional coaching can take a young athletic trainer.

Madeline Barnes.Barnes, who earned a degree in athletic training in 2021 from Cedarville University, is now serving in a competitive residency at the internationally recognized Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado 鈥 one of the most prestigious orthopedic centers in the world.

The clinic has treated elite athletes, including U.S. Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn, NFL quarterback Peyton Manning and professional tennis star Rafael Nadal. Known for its cutting-edge research and surgical innovation, The Steadman Clinic draws patients seeking the highest level of orthopedic care from around the globe.

Barnes will complete eight-week rotations with various orthopedic surgeons, assisting with clinical and surgical procedures and participating in outreach events that serve the local community.

Although she was first introduced to athletic training in high school while being treated for her own injuries, Barnes didn鈥檛 initially recognize it as her career path. Over time, those early experiences sparked a passion that grew during her years at Cedarville University.

鈥淚 chose Cedarville because of its excellence in both athletic training and track and field,鈥 said Barnes. 鈥淏ut what really stood out to me was the university鈥檚 commitment to a biblical worldview. That foundation shaped everything for me 鈥 professionally and personally.鈥

She credits Cedarville for preparing her not only for the demands of graduate school but also for the rigors of the Steadman residency.

Barnes views athletic training as a mission, not just a job.

鈥淭he fact that I鈥檓 able to pour into people fills my cup,鈥 said Barnes. 鈥淕iving of yourself generously is what will fill you back up as you see the joy on other people鈥檚 faces.鈥

As Barnes works alongside some of the world鈥檚 leading surgeons and cares for elite athletes, Cedarville continues to prepare the next generation of athletic trainers. In response to the growing national demand, the university now offers a Master of Athletic Training (MAT) program that readies students for board certification and advanced clinical roles.

鈥淥ur program emphasizes mentorship and clinical readiness,鈥 said Dr. Ken Blood, program director. 鈥淔or me, athletic training has always been a ministry. It gives you a platform to display your faith in the way you carry yourself and how you treat others.鈥

The MAT curriculum combines academic rigor with real-world experience through immersive clinical rotations. Students are trained by experienced professionals and mentored in Christ-centered care 鈥 equipping them to serve not only with skill but with compassion and purpose.

Barnes is now putting that calling into practice, carrying her training and faith into the field.

Cedarville University, an evangelical Christian鈥痠nstitution in southwest Ohio, offers undergraduate and graduate residential and online programs across arts, sciences and professional fields. With 7,265 students, it ranks among Ohio's largest private universities and is recognized by鈥疶he Wall Street Journal鈥痑s being among the nation鈥檚 top three evangelical universities.
