Third Culture Kid Research Presented at National Conference

by Tessa Landrum, Student Public Relations Writer

International Student Services and the Multicultural and International Student Organization (MISO)Cedarville University communication students presented research on third culture kids in higher education at both the National Communication Association (NCA) and Religious Communication Association (RCA) annual conferences last fall.

According to Dr. Andrew Harris, assistant professor of communication at Cedarville, having undergraduate research accepted to professional conferences is a testimony to the value and quality of work conducted by Cedarville students.

鈥淎lthough they are undergraduate students, their work is being evaluated anonymously alongside students in master鈥檚 and Ph.D. programs,鈥 said Harris. 鈥淭o present research at any conference, at any level, is always an honor for that student.鈥

Emma Van Veldhuizen, a senior strategic communication major from Bellbrook, Ohio, and Evilyn Pinnow, a senior strategic communication major from Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, presented papers at the RCA鈥檚 conference. Claire Feathers, a 2020 graduate of Cedarville from Powell, Wyoming, and Jesse Musgrave, a junior strategic communication major from Mt. Blanchard, Ohio, co-authored a paper with Harris, which they presented at the NCA鈥檚 annual conference. Both conferences were held virtually via Zoom this year.

A classwide interest in how Christian universities communicate with and serve international student populations inspired Van Veldhuizen, Pinnow, Feathers and Musgrave to pursue the subject outside of their qualitative research class. They used an interview-based research method to gather data from university peers.

鈥淭he research process requires us to ask participants for their own cultural views rather than assuming we know who someone is based on their looks or where their parents are from,鈥 said Harris. 鈥淲hile that seems like a really basic lesson, it鈥檚 one we so often forget. People choose to use the shortcut of visual cues, and there are many times when those don鈥檛 work.鈥

Van Veldhuizen explored the visual paradox of third culture kids, such as the children of missionaries, whose physical appearance may not match their cultural identity. Pinnow researched how missionary kids transition from their home culture on the mission field and adapt to the American culture of a university. Harris, Feathers and Musgrave examined how an individual integrates multiple cultures into their identity.

鈥淚 think, as Christians, part of working in and engaging culture, especially academia, involves doing the kind of work that meets and exceeds the standards set by our secular fellows,鈥 said Musgrave. 鈥淭he research guided and overseen by Dr. Harris is an example of that.鈥

Harris added that equipping students to do excellent work in both academic and professional fields is a matter of training his future colleagues.

鈥淲hat excites me the most about working with Cedarville students is that I鈥檓 training the people who will eventually become my replacements,鈥 said Harris. 鈥淥ne day I won鈥檛 be Dr. Harris to them; I鈥檒l just be Andrew. That will be the fabulous reward for the hard work we are doing together right now.鈥
