A team of students from Cedarville University鈥檚 School of Pharmacy placed in the top 16 in the (ACCP) Clinical Pharmacy Challenge earlier this month. Each round consisted of three segments of questions based on topics including pharmacology, biostatistics, emergency medicine, etc.
Cedarville鈥檚 students began their quest for the Clinical Pharmacy Challenge title on Sept. 8, and successfully advanced through four rounds of online competition before the team was eliminated on Sept. 17. The quarterfinal round will be held at the ACCP Annual Meeting in Hollywood, Florida, on Oct. 22.
The team consisted of three students, Jordan Long, from Chillicothe, Ohio; Cara Toms, from Castalia, Ohio; and Sarah Myers, from Lancaster, Ohio, each in their final year of the doctoral pharmacy program. Emily Laswell, Pharm.D., assistant professor of pharmacy practice, was the team鈥檚 adviser.
鈥淐ompeting in the challenge was a phenomenal experience,鈥 said Long, the team鈥檚 leader. 鈥淭o be among the top schools in the country is an honor.鈥
Cedarville鈥檚 School of Pharmacy curriculum takes on a team based learning approach, where students are placed in small groups to study, conduct case studies and practice patient care. This affords them the ability to succeed in situations such as the ACCP Clinical Pharmacy Challenge.
鈥淭he students certainly exceeded my expectations,鈥 said Laswell. 鈥淭hey did a great job working together and learning from each other during the competition. I believe the students will benefit from this experience.鈥
Long attributes his ability to participate in the challenge to the high academic standards his professors hold him to.
鈥淪ome of the questions were very difficult in this competition, but we felt well prepared to answer them because of the knowledge we gained in our classes. We hope that our pharmacy students continue to compete in the competition, and in doing so, represent Christ and Cedarville well.鈥
