Kim Ahlgrim, director of academic enrichment at Cedarville University, has been named the 2016 鈥淢ember of the Year鈥 by the National Tutoring Association (NTA). Ahlgrim received the award at the NTA鈥檚 National Conference earlier this month in Tampa, Florida.
The NTA recognized Ahlgrim for her leadership of The Cove, the university鈥檚 academic enrichment center, as well as her work as a national speaker in academic coaching and for being an academic consultant for a number of other colleges and universities. In addition, Ahlgrim teamed with Deidre Sizer, tutoring and office coordinator, to present a session on think tanks at the NTA Conference.
鈥淒eidre Sizer does an excellent job in managing the ever-growing tutoring program through matching students with tutors and creating a loving academic environment,鈥 said Ahlgrim.
Thanks to a cutting-edge approach to peer tutoring, The Cove has been recognized as one of the top academic enrichment centers in the country by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD).
鈥淥ur students form powerful relationships through peer tutoring. They learn about leadership, getting into someone鈥檚 life, teaching, and servanthood,鈥 said Ahlgrim. 鈥淭he ability to connect with others makes our tutors different and makes them stronger professionally.鈥
The Cove鈥檚 success can be seen through Cedarville鈥檚 97 percent career placement rate and 73 percent graduation rate. The national graduation rate for NCAA II institutions is 49 percent.
鈥淲e want others to look at our programs and see we鈥檙e doing something great. We love sharing our techniques with other universities on how to build academic support systems where students feel welcome,鈥 said Ahlgrim. 鈥淭his is a ministry more than a job. As we pray for our students and tutors, we鈥檝e continued to seek excellence and reflect the character of Christ.鈥
