Two groups of students from Cedarville University will be recognized in official resolutions at the Ohio Senate on Wednesday, Oct. 14, for their dedication to pursing excellence outside of the classroom. Students from Cedarville鈥檚 schools of pharmacy and engineering and computer science will be recognized.
The resolutions will be introduced by Senator Chris Widener of Ohio鈥檚 10th District, which includes Clark, Greene and Madison counties.
鈥淲e are extremely proud of the academic excellence that comes from Cedarville University鈥檚 programs,鈥 said Widener. 鈥淭he recognition of the students' ingenuity in national competition and their involvement in our community is critical to our future health and prosperity as a state. I am proud to have Cedarville in Ohio and in my district.鈥
Students from the school of pharmacy are being recognized for participating in a community engagement program called Students Teaching Education Plans for Success (STEPS). The group was also recognized by the American Association of Schools and Pharmacy (AACP) as one of only four schools to receive the 2014-15 Student Community Engagement Service Award.
Students from Cedarville and Wright State University joined together to create STEPS, which provides medical screenings and medicinal information to the homeless population in and around the Miami Valley every Saturday.
Ginger Cameron, Ph.D., assistant dean of assessment and assistant professor of pharmacy practice serves as the faculty advisor for STEPS, and will join the group when it is recognized by the Senate.
鈥淭hese students put in so much effort to create an interdisciplinary program that was public health centered,鈥 said Cameron. 鈥淭hey gathered students from nursing, psychology, pre-med and pharmacy programs to provide physical, mental and spiritual support to people who may not otherwise receive it. These students worked hard and created a sustainable program; it鈥檚 so exciting to see their efforts recognized.鈥
Students from Cedarville鈥檚 school of engineering and computer science will also be recognized by the Senate for winning their third-straight Autonomous Robotics Competition at the 2015 American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) Conference in Seattle.
This year, the team overcame last-minute technical problems to finish nearly 65 points ahead of second-place Monroe Community College. Clint Kohl, Ph.D., professor of computer engineering and the team鈥檚 faculty adviser, will accompany the robotics team.
鈥淭he students spent months creating a robot that would perform well,鈥 said Kohl. 鈥淪o when we ran into difficulties just minutes before the start of the competition, they were able to problem-solve quickly and find solutions. To see them receive recognition for their hard work is extremely humbling.鈥
The Senate session will be open to the public and will also be available via live stream at .
