While the days following Thanksgiving are often filled with mass consumerism as people join the rush of 鈥淏lack Friday鈥 and 鈥淐yber Monday,鈥 faculty and staff at Cedarville University paused on Tuesday, Dec. 1, to participate in 鈥淕iving Tuesday.鈥
Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., faculty and staff donated $34,367, far surpassing last year鈥檚 total of $25,156. Donations will go toward a variety of funds including scholarships, athletics and the campaign to renovate the Jeremiah Chapel.
Approximately 65 percent of Cedarville鈥檚 faculty and staff made a contribution on 鈥淕iving Tuesday,鈥 more than doubling the national faculty/staff average of 25 percent.
"Cedarville is blessed to have faculty and staff who not only invest in our students with their time and energy, but also with their financial resources,鈥 said Stephanie Carroll, director of alumni relations and annual giving. 鈥淕iving Tuesday reflects that we have faculty and staff who believe in Cedarville's mission and want to see Cedarville continue to be a University that excels in everything we do for the Word of God and the Testimony of Jesus Christ."
A nationwide initiative, 鈥淕iving Tuesday鈥 began in 2012 as a way for people to give back during the holiday season. It is estimated that the event has resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in charitable donations since its inception.
Contributions to Cedarville can be made online 24 hours a day at or by calling 1-888-CEDARVILLE during normal business hours.
