2025 Keynote Speakers

Jack Phillips and Samuel Green
Jack Phillips and Samuel Green

Owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop | Founder, President, and General Counsel of Reason for Life

Keynote #1

Session title: The Cost of My Faith

Jack Phillips is the Colorado cake artist who was at the center of one of 2018’s most talked-about U.S. Supreme Court decisions. From an early age, Jack had developed his expertise in painting, drawing, and cartooning. When Jack started Masterpiece Cakeshop in 1993, it was to honor God through his work every day. In 2012, Jack declined a request to create a custom cake celebrating a same-sex wedding, explaining that he would be happy to design a cake for the customers for a different event, or sell them anything else in his shop, but that he could not create cakes expressing messages that conflict with his deeply held religious beliefs. But for more than twelve years, Jack was pulled away from his work in order to defend his freedom to express what he believes without fear of government punishment. After three wins — including one at the U.S. Supreme Court — Jack’s rights have been vindicated again and again.

Before founding Reason for Life, Samuel spent five years at Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), where he engaged in litigation to defend the sanctity of life, freedom of speech, and religious liberty. Samuel has also worked as a litigation associate at a large law firm, as a member of a presidential campaign’s legal team, and as a law clerk to the Honorable Raymond W. Gruender of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
