Amid global conflict and cultural shifts, one Cedarville University professor is helping students better understand world events.
Dr. Kyung-hwa (Christine) Kim, associate professor of , was recently appointed as a Higher Education Ambassador with the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), a globally recognized bipartisan think tank with main headquarters in New York City and Washington, D.C. CFR supports high school and college educators by providing classroom-ready resources focused on international affairs.
Through the eight-month program, Kim will attend CFR-led professional development sessions, network with other higher education representatives and integrate CFR’s educational resources in her classroom.
“I believe in what CFR is doing,” said Kim. “Being selected as an ambassador for their cause gives me more passion for what I teach.”
A Seoul, South Korea, native, Kim teaches courses and leads extracurricular programs focused on international affairs, like leading the program in Seoul, Korea.
“I believe that my students need to know about the world,” said Kim. “You have to know about your own country as well as the world. You can’t dissociate yourself from what’s happening internationally.”
Kim emphasized the significance of CFR’s resources, which she described as free, timely and high-quality. “I need up-to-date information for my courses, but textbooks are generally dated. These resources are not,” said Kim.
Ultimately, Kim hopes her students develop a deeper understanding of their role in international affairs. “Global education is so important. We live in an interconnected world — wherever you go in life, you’ll interact with people from all around the world,” said Kim. “As Christians, we are called to serve as ambassadors for Christ, equipped with biblical knowledge and spiritual sensitivity. We don’t know where God will call us, but we want to be ready when He does.”
