Pharmacy Preceptor Requirements and Expectations
Understanding the pharmacy preceptor requirements is key to knowing how you can make an impact. As a Cedarville preceptor, you will:
- Provide hands-on learning experiences at your practice site
- Guide students in applying classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios
- Evaluate student performance and provide mentorship
- Access Centennial Library resources through Core ELMS
- Participate in onsite and online continuing education (ACPE-approved CE)

How do I become a pharmacy preceptor?
To get started, simply to express your interest. We’ll connect with you to discuss your background, practice setting, and next steps. From there, we’ll guide you through onboarding, training, and student rotation setup.
What are the pharmacy preceptor requirements?
Preceptors must be licensed pharmacists in good standing with at least one year of post-licensure experience. You should have a practice setting that supports experiential learning and a desire to mentor the next generation of pharmacists. We’ll provide you with training and ongoing support through our learning management system (LMS).
What types of rotations will I be supervising?
Our students complete both Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs). Based on your site’s capabilities and your experience, you may precept students in areas such as community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, ambulatory care, or specialty practice.
What support will I receive as a preceptor?
We equip all preceptors with access to Core ELMS, which includes training modules, evaluation tools, and rotation management features. You’ll also receive regular updates, invitations to campus events, and our bi-annual newsletter to stay connected with the University.
Are there any benefits to becoming a preceptor?
Yes! In addition to the personal and professional satisfaction of mentoring future pharmacists, many preceptors receive CE credit opportunities, access to University resources, and the chance to give back to the profession. It’s a meaningful way to stay engaged and grow as a practitioner.
