About the Biblical Counseling Program

Why Study Biblical Counseling at Cedarville?

If you have a heart for people and a desire to help them heal and grow, Cedarville University's online Biblical Counseling program, one of four concentrations under the Master of Theological Studies, will equip you with the methodology and skills to provide faithful biblical counseling to individuals, couples, and families in a church, ministry, or missions setting.

Cedarville's Biblical Counseling program will equip you to minister God's Word into life's most difficult moments, whether that's counseling in a ministry context or creating a culture of care within your church community.

This 36-credit hour program — including 15 hours of core Bible and theology courses and 21 hours dedicated to your biblical counseling training — is offered in a convenient, fully online format and can be completed in as little as one calendar year. You can choose to take classes part time to fit your personal schedule. A limited number of in-class delivery courses may also be available. The program is highly flexible and affordable.

Biblically Grounded — God transforms the hearts and lives of His people through His Word. You will be rooted in Scripture as you learn to creatively and effectively apply biblical truth to those who are hurting, broken, or trapped in sin in your ministry.

Real-World Application — God's Word is relevant for issues of life. This program will give you the tools to be able to bridge the gap between understanding and applying God's Word to the struggles your people will face in ministry.

You can use your master's in biblical counseling to provide biblical counsel to individuals, couples, and families in a church, ministry, or missions setting. You'll be taught to see the applicability of biblical counseling’s philosophy to the whole church. Not only will you be equipped for the ministry counseling room, but you'll also be prepared to rightly apply God's Word throughout your local church ministries, helping mobilize your church community to create a culture of care.

This program provides rigorous training in biblically grounded counseling, equipping graduates for ministry roles that apply Scripture to life’s challenges. While not designed to meet state licensure requirements, it serves as a solid foundation for those pursuing biblical counseling certification.

Program Start Dates — Applications are accepted throughout the year, and you can enroll and begin classes in August, October, January, March, May, or July.

You will complete 36 credit hours, including 15 credits in the Master of Theological Studies core and 21 credits in specialized biblical counseling courses, encompassing the practice of counseling as well as specific issues like marriage and crisis counseling.

"Scripture and Scrubs” Encourages Christian Health Care Workers

While health care scholars are asking if religion can help reduce health care burnout, Cedarville University’s Dr. Michael Sherr, professor of social work, believes it can. Sherr, co-author of “Scriptures and Scrubs: A Christian Calling to Healthcare,” addresses in the book how a Christian health care worker can combat burnout by staying centered on biblical truths.
